Race for Golden Boot Heats Up
Much attention is on the race for the Premier League title in England but there is another race taking place which is equally as fascinating and that’s for the Golden Boot.
There was controversy towards the end of last season as Mohamed Salah and Harry Kane went head-to-head to finish the season as top goal scorer. Kane was accused of claiming a goal that was not his but it made little difference in the end as Salah went on to lift the Golden Boot award, breaking record in the progress.
As we enter the business end of the 2018/19 Premier League campaign, we could be about to embark on the greatest race we have seen in the Premier League era to finish top of the goal scoring charts.
Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Manchester City each have a representative who could still finish the season as top scorer in the Premier League.
Salah the Favourite
Currently top of the pile is Mohamed Salah, with 16 goals and he remains the favourite with the bookmakers to win the Golden Boot at 8/11 with Betfair. Liverpool are fighting for the title this season and will need the Egyptian in good goal scoring form if they are to hold off the threat of both Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.
Salah has played more minutes than any of his rivals in the Premier League this season and is sure to remain an automatic first choice starter for the remainder of the campaign.
Aubameyang in the Running
Second in the top scorer charts, just one goal behind Salah on 15 goals is Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang. The Gabonese international striker has been in excellent form for Arsenal this season despite the club falling behind in the title race. He is another player who seems set to start every Premier League game from now until the end of the season and makes a good bet to finish as the Premier League’s top goal scorer at 5/2 with BetVictor.
Aguero Falling Behind
The odds begin to lengthen now and next in the betting is Sergio Aguero at 6/1 with Betfair. The Argentine striker already finds himself 5 goals behind Salah in the top scorers chart and could find his number of starts in the Premier League reduced as the season develops.
Manchester City are fighting on four fronts and with Gabriel Jesus also available, Aguero will not start every league game which puts him at a disadvantage. However, we know Aguero is capable of scoring three or four goals in a game and should not be ruled out.
Kane and Hazard the Outsiders
Tottenham Hotspur are not out of the title race and will need Harry Kane back and firing on all cylinders if they are to mount a serious challenge. The England man has 14 goals to his name and at 14/1 with BetVictor could be worth a punt if the injury news is positive over the next week.
The final contender for the Premier League Golden boot is Eden Hazard. Chelsea are out of the title race but when Hazard turns it on, he is extremely difficult to stop, as Huddersfield town found out to their cost recently. If Chelsea go on a good run Hazard will be in the goals and can be backed at 25/1 with Betfair.
