With one of the most anticipated fights in boxing history having finally been confirmed, the countdown to the clash between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Conor McGregor has well and truly began. Despite Mayweather, with an undefeated record throughout his professional career, seemingly holding all of the aces in the build up to the fight, many are predicting that McGregor, a UFC star, can actually cause the American more than a few problems. As a result, interest in the fight from a betting perspective also continues to intensify, with many bookmakers already offering odds on the winner of the bout. With the fight set to take place on August 27th in Las Vegas, let’s take a look at the two fighters, as well as the odds as they currently stand.
Floyd Mayweather Jr
Mayweather, who comes out of retirement at the age of 40, it the undoubted favourite for the fight, with the self-proclaimed “Pretty Boy” having written his name into the history books as one of the greatest boxers of his generation. Having won world titles in five different weight classes, it is fair to say that Mayweather knows his way around the ring. Even when he came up against Manny Pacquiao, for many the second greatest fighter of his generation, the great one came out on top in comfortable fashion. His skills in both defence and attack have won him many plaudits over the years, with many questioning whether McGregor has the time required in order to both learn the sport, as well as understand the methods in which Mayweather can be hurt.
Conor McGregor
Despite “The Notorious” Conor McGregor having largely dominated the UFC scene over recent years, the Irishman has now decided to turn his hand to the world of boxing. Although he has little to lose, with many predicting an easy ride for Mayweather, the fact that the American has not won by way of knock-out since 2011 will perhaps offer McGregor some hope. With McGregor set to earn around $100 million from this fight, he will want to ensure that he is not embarrassed in Las Vegas. McGregor’s trainer Owen Roddy is certainly confident for his client however, stating that he is convinced that the Irishman will shock the world by overcoming Mayweather.
