The Three Lions may well have bowed out of the World Cup after their 2-1 loss to Croatia in extra time on Wednesday, but Gareth Southgate’s men still have one more game left to play. The dreaded Third Placed Playoff takes place on Saturday between two sides who will feel aggrieved that they haven’t made the final. Southgate’s England side were unfortunate to go out after Mario Mandzukic scored a winner in extra time for Croatia after England had led the game for so long. Meanwhile, on Tuesday night, Belgium went out to France in their Semi Final, with the only goal of the game coming via Samuel Umtiti’s head from a French corner.
Southgate may well decide to make changes for the game on Saturday, with the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Gary Cahill, Danny Rose, Eric Dier and Marcus Rashford all expected to start. One man who may well demand that he starts the game is Harry Kane, with the Tottenham Hotspur striker currently leading the Golden Boot race with six goals. Kane was fairly poor against Croatia last time out, but the England captain will be desperate to finish off this World Cup with a goal on Saturday to cement his place as the top scorer.
These two sides met earlier in the competition in a fairly meaningless group game in which both sides sent out reserve teams and it could well be the same on Saturday, but even so, neither side will want to finish the tournament with back to back defeats. Ladbrokes have a fantastic new customer offer running for the match, with the bookmaker offering odds of 20/1 on England to score a goal in the game. Even though England didn’t manage to find the back of the net when these two sides met in the group stages, with Kane chasing the Golden Boot, I wouldn’t back against goals on Saturday.
