Arguably the most prestigious of all the Grand Slam tournaments, Wimbledon gets underway at SW19 with the usual plethora of big names all vying to get their hands on the trophy in two weeks’ time. Eight-time winner Roger Federer is the top seed in the 128 player draw and on his favoured surface of grass, will once again be the man to beat in South West London.
Outright Betting
With 128 players in the draw, whoever lifts the trophy in 2 weeks’ time will have to overcome 7 tricky opponents – over the best of 5 set matches.
Here’s a look at some of our favourites for the Wimbledon title:
Roger Federer – 15/8 (Ladbrokes) – The Swiss legend returns to his favourite Grand Slam in fine form once again having already picked up the Australian Open title this season before his now annual sabbatical during the clay season which looks to have rejuvenated him for the grass court swing. No male player has won the title at SW19 more times than Federer and he could take some stopping again this time round.
Novak Djokovic – 11/2 (Coral) – Three time Wimbledon champion Djokovic looks to be returning to form at exactly the right time on one of his favourite surfaces. The enigmatic Serb has struggles with injuries and a loss of form this season but his runner-up showing at Queens club last week suggests he is back to somewhere near his best and he can never be discarded at this level.
Marin Cilic – 7/1 (Betway) – Last year’s beaten finalist Marin Cilic has become a very consistent figure at the business end of Grand Slams in recent seasons and he loves playing on the grass. His title-winning performance at Queen’s club last week was indicative of a man in good form and confident in his game plan – he could take some stopping at the All England Club.
Rafael Nadal – 15/2 (Betfred) – The World Number 1 arrives in London fresh off the back of picking up his 11th French Open title at Roland Garros and he looks well equipped to make a charge on the draw this year. Whilst his game isn’t notoriously suited to grass, he has won the title at Wimbledon twice and at number 2 seed looks to have a relatively easy path to at least the last 8.
Juan Martin Del Potro – 20/1 (Bet Bright) – The Argentine has had one of his most consistent seasons in recent times and his big serve has the capacity to trouble all of his opponents.
Nick Kyrgios – 20/1 (William Hill) – The unpredictable Aussie could cause havoc here at Wimbledon with his unique playing style and his hordes of fans backing him – has the game to cause problems on grass too.
Alexander Zverev – 20/1 (Betfair) – The young German is one of the most exciting talents on the ATP Tour and it looks to be a matter of time before he registers his first Grand Slam – unknown quantity on grass though.
Borna Coric – 50/1 (10 Bet) – The Croatian has had by far his best season on the tour, reaching the semi-finals at Indian Wells before defeating Roger Federer on the grass at Halle last week. One to watch here.
Sam Querrey – 100/1 (888 Sport) – The big-serving American reached the last 4 at Wimbledon last year and looks well placed to have another go on the grass this season.
