The second major is upon us as the world’s top names head to New York looking to claim the US Open at Shinnecock Hills. As always, there is a distinctively home-grown, American feel about the US Open with so many entrants securing their ranking points through the PGA Tour system but there are players from all over the globe primed and ready to make their respective assaults on the tournament.

Patrick Reed won the first major of the season by picking up the Masters at Augusta back in April and there looks to be plenty of candidates to follow in his footsteps this week:
Here’s a look at some of our favourites for the US Open:
Dustin Johnson – 8/1 (Ladbrokes) – Having returned to World Number 1 last week following his win at the St Jude classic, he looks well set to mount a charge here in New York. The 2016 winner of the US Open is looking to add a second major to his collection.
Rory McIlroy – 12/1 (Bet Victor) – The Northern Irishman hasn’t been able to pick up a trophy in recent weeks but has been consistently in contention on both the PGA and European tours. His talent is undoubted though and he is always one to watch and he also won the US Open in 2011.
Justin Thomas – 12/1 (Betfair) – Another from the crop of impressive young Americans, Thomas has followed up his impressive 2017 season (culminating in a Grand Slam win at the PGA Championship) with a solid first half of 2018 and he currently finds himself ranked number 2 in the world. One to watch.
Justin Rose– 14/1 (Bet Bright) – The Olympic champion is always a contender in any event he plays in, highlighted by his win last month at Fort Worth. The Englishman is renowned for his incredible mental strength and he always seems to be in good nick around this time of the year – 2013 US Open champion.
Jason Day – 16/1 (Ladbrokes) – Form can mean so much on a golf course and Jason Day picked up his first win of the season last month at the Wells Fargo Championship to return to the world’s top 10. The enigmatic Aussie has had his struggles in recent months but looks to be returning to form when it matters.
Jordan Spieth – 16/1 (William Hill) – A figure of consistency in recent seasons, Jordan Spieth continues to belie his youthful years. The three time major winner has yet to win the Players Championship and despite missing the cut last time out, is always in contention at the big events – last won the US Open in 2015.
Rickie Fowler – 20/1 (Betfred) – In danger of always being the bridesmaid, Fowler has finished in the top 3 at all of the majors without actually winning one. How he would love a trophy and his first major here.
Jon Rahm – 22/1 (Betway) – The young Spaniard is making a real name for himself on the tour – currently ranked number 4 in the world and his 4th place finish at the Masters could hold him in good stead here.
Tiger Woods – 25/1 (10 Bet) – No golf tournament is complete without the name of Tiger Woods in the field. He will be pleased to be back at the US Open – a tournament he has won three times before (200, 2002 and 2008) – who would bet against him featuring prominently here.
