The final tournament before the French Open kicks off in Rome with a strong field assembling on the Italian capital before the looming second major of the season next week. Rafael Nadal once again headlines an impressive field and with his potential fragility being displayed in defeat to Dominic Thiem in Madrid last week, many of the big hitters on the tour will fancy their chances here.
Outright Betting & ATP Rome Masters Preview
The tournament organisers in Rome will be delighted with the field they’ve been able to assemble so close to Roland Garros:
Here’s a look at some of our favourites for the Rome title & Odds:
- Rafael Nadal – 4/9 (William Hill) – The King of clay was almost a year unbeaten on the dirt before his defeat to Dominic Thiem last week in what was an incredible run. Winning the titles at Monte Carlo & Barcelona have become the norm for Nadal who will be eager to get back to winning ways before going in pursuit of his 11th French Open title. Nadal has won this event a remarkable 7 times and is always tough to be against on clay.
- Alexander Zverev – 7/1 (Ladbrokes) – The young German is proving a very consistent figure on the ATP Tour these days and picked up his first trophy of the season last time in Munich a fortnight ago before following it up with an incredible Masters 1000 win in Madrid last week. Seeded 2 here, he is a genuine threat to every other player in the draw and is over-priced simply due to Nadal’s form.
- Dominic Thiem – 10/1 (Coral) – The Austrian has enjoyed another fruitful season on the ATP Tour and currently resides in the world’s top 8. A clay court specialist who reached the final in Madrid last week and the last 4 of the French Open last year and having beaten Nadal in Madrid last week, he looks to be in good nick.
- Novak Djokovic – 14/1 (10 Bet) – The former world number one is a 4 time winner here in Madrid but his form has been dreadful this season – epitomised by his defeat to Kyle Edmund in Madrid. His game needs to improve dramatically and he will be keen to get minutes on the court with the French Open looming large at the end of the month.
Here are some of the outside betting tips in Rome this week:
- Juan Martin del Potro – 14/1 (Bet Victor) – The big-hitting Argentine has been in good form all season on the ATP Tour but doesn’t always enjoy the clay.
- Marin Cilic – 25/1 (Betfred) – The Australian Open finalist has struggled with injury since the start of the year but tends to save his best tennis for the big events and will want to get into form before Paris.
- Borna Coric – 50/1 (Betway) – The young Croat has had an incredible 2018, epitomised by reaching the semi-final at Indian Wells earlier in the season. An unknown quantity on clay but has been consistent this term and was unlucky against in the last 16 against Dominic Thiem last week.
