In a clay-court season dominated by Rafael Nadal so far, the tour rolls on to Madrid with questions being asked whether it’s possible for anyone to stop the Mallorcan. The 10 time French Open winner headlines a very strong field in the Spanish capital and he will, as always, be the man to beat on the dirt. With a further 8 of the world’s top 10 in action, it promises to be a big final week in the preparation for the French Open.
Outright Betting & ATP Madrid Masters Preview
There’s a strong draw present in Madrid with home interest mirroring international flair in an enthralling player list.
Here’s a look at some of our favourites for the Madrid title & Odds:
- Rafael Nadal – 2/5 (Ladbrokes) – The King of clay is in the midst of an incredible run. Winning the titles at Monte Carlo & Barcelona at a canter in recent weeks and he simply looks unstoppable on the clay currently. Madrid has posed problems for him in the past, with its inconsistent court surface but Rafa looks too strong currently for the chasing pack.
- Alexander Zverev – 14/1 (William Hill) – The young German is proving a very consistent figure on the ATP Tour these days and picked up his first trophy of the season last time out in Munich. Seeded 2 here, he is a genuine threat to every other player in the draw and is over-priced simply due to Nadal’s form.
- Novak Djokovic – 14/1 (Ladbrokes) – The former world number one is a past winner in Madrid but has struggled for form and fitness over the past 12 months. His game looks to be coming back together though and he will be keen to get minutes on the court with the French Open looming large at the end of the month.
- Dominic Thiem – 18/1 (Betfair) – The Austrian has enjoyed another fruitful season on the ATP Tour and currently resides in the world’s top 5. A clay court specialist who reached the last 4 of the French Open last season he’s always a threat on the dirt but has come up well short against Nadal this season.
Although the Madrid Open looks a forgone conclusion this week, here are some of the outside betting tips:
- Hyeon Chung – 40/1 (Betfair) – The Australian Open semi-finalist has a tough draw here in Madrid but is the hottest property on the ATP Tour currently and is tough to beat on any surface.
- Pablo Carreno-Busta – 80/1 (Betfred) – Last year’s US Open semi-finalist loves the clay and reached the semis of the Estoril Open last week. Seeded 9 here and has home crowd support too.
- Stefanos Tsitsipas – 100/1 (William Hill) – Hailing from Greece and seen as part of the next generation of players coming through, Tsitsipas has had a great start to the season – particularly on clay and looks way overpriced here.
- Borna Coric – 150/1 (Uni Bet) – The young Croat has had an incredible 2018, epitomised by reaching the final at Indian Wells earlier in the season. An unknown quantity on clay but has been consistent this term.
