Reigning darts World Champion Michael van Gerwen has made a successful start to his title defence at the Ally Pally after cruising past compatriot Christian Kist in the first round of action. The Dutchman is looking for his third PDC Darts World Championship title and on the back of some cracking form lately, he is the front-runner and the man to take down.
Van Gerwen went into the World Championships on the back of consecutive titles at the European Championship, the Grand Slam of Darts and the Players Championship Finals. Before each of his previous two World Championship titles, he had won the Players Championship Finals so that trend could well continue into this one.
Basically, everyone will want to be avoiding the World Number One in the draw. With that having been said, MVG has a pretty wide open draw ahead of him and it looks as if he could get through to the semi-finals pretty unopposed. That is because most of the other real challengers in the tournament, Adrian Lewis, Peter Wright, Phil Taylor and Gary Anderson are all squished together down it the bottom half of the draw.
