There has been a big shift in the build-up to the Caspian Caviar Gold Cup which goes off on Saturday at Cheltenham. The ante-post favourite Waiting Patiently has withdrawn along with other notable absentees like Acapella Bourgeois and Gold Present. Still, there is going to be a huge renewal still on the cards between the first five from last year’s edition of the race. Looking back at the recent BetVictor Gold Cup where most of the frontrunners competed, that just adds more spice to this forthcoming battle.
Splash Of Ginge, Starchitect, Le Prezien, Ballyalton and Romain De Senam were the top five in the Cheltenham race twelve months ago and they were all still in on Monday to get another crack at the title. It has created a really tight tussle between them in the winners odds and punters are going to have to dig their way through all of this.
Last year’s runner-up Starchitect is the joint favourite alongside Clan Des Obeaux in the betting for the Caspian Caviar Gold Cup 2017. A recent winner at Haydock, Clan Des Obeaux has become a really good fancy to go all the way and land the win on the back of the current form and he has a tremendous future ahead of him. But he is maturing fast, the power is there but there are going to be some serious challengers to that supremacy in what is always an action-packed feature race.
Starchitect was beaten into second place at the recent BetVictor Gold Cup back in November by Splash of Ginge, so the two of these will renew that rivalry. Splash of Ginge will like the going a little bit on the heavier side as the nine-year-old can grind it out but Le Prezien makes for a really interesting runner in the race. This is a fast finisher with a great turn of pace so if he can stand there in the mix towards the end he is a great fit at the course. Ballyalton was fourth at the BetVictor Gold Cup but needs a bit firmer ground to hold his own.
