3M Open Tips Golf Preview, Prediction & Betting Tips
The PGA Tour welcomes another new tournament this week in the shape of the 3M Open, a tournament that takes place in Minnesota at the TPC Twin Cities.
There’s no past tournament-form to help us solve this week’s PGA Tour event, but we can get an insight into the type of score that might be needed to win. That’s because TPC Twin Cities has staged PGA Tour Champions Tour Events at the course in 2016, 2017, and 2018, with the winning scores being -19, -20, and -21.
Following those events, PGA professionals Tim Herron and Tom Lehman renovated the course for this event, adding 350-yards. However, as the current crop of professional hit it that bit further than those on the Champions Tour, the extra length is only expected to provide a similar test.
TPC Twin Cities will play as a Par 71 at just under 7,500 yards, and players will have 27 water hazards to avoid. The Greens are Bentgrass and are expected to run at around 12 on the Stimpmeter. The par 3s will provide a stern test this week, with three measuring 200-yards+, whilst not all players will be able to reach the three 590-yard+ Par-5s in two shots. There are also six par-4s that most players will be hitting a wedge or nine-iron into second shot, so decent wedge players could go well this week.
3M Open 2019 Market Leaders
Brooks Koepka heads the market for the 2019 3M Open at around 8/1, but the bookies will probably be happy to take plenty of money for the four-time major winner. That’s because he simply doesn’t care about winning events like this, and you’d be well out of pocket backing him for run-of-the-mill PGA Tour events at short prices.
Jason Day also looks under-priced at around 11/1, but it will be interesting to see if his new caddie Steve Williams can turn him into the winning machine the Australian’s natural talent suggests he should be. Day also has four victories on Bentgrass greens to his name and he could have the right blend of distance and touch to thrive on this course.
Hideki Matsuyama is another world-class talent but, despite showing some consistent form of late, he’s still struggling to be a genuine contender most weeks.
That’s why Bryson DeChambeau could be the best bet near the top of the market this week. He seems to have got over whatever caused him to miss a string of cuts, and his top-10 at the Travellers on his last appearance suggests he could be close to a return to the winners’ enclosure. Three of his wins have been with scores between –18 and –21, whilst he also has plenty of good performance in the bank at other TPC courses.
Back a Player Motivated by the Presidents Cup
Kevin Na has stated that he’d like to play in the President’s Cup this year, and he’ll need to add some more solid performances to his recent win in the Charles Schwab Cup if he’s to make it. He loves Bentgrass Greens and his putting and accurate wedge play could be an ideal combination this week.
